'State of Play' Premieres in London

Russell Crowe and Dame Helen Mirren were among a host of stars who took to the red carpet in central London on Tuesday for the world premiere of the political thriller “State of Play.”

Based on a 2003 BBC drama of the same name, the story, which is set in Washington, sees a team of investigative reporters working with a police detective to find out who is behind two seemingly unrelated murders, one of which is linked to a prominent Congressman.

Crowe plays veteran reporter Cal McAffrey who has to navigate the world of political spin and intrigue with Mirren playing his tough-talking editor.

Standing outside the cinema in Leicester Square, Mirren, wearing a cream-coloured Donna Karan outfit and Jimmy Choo shoes, signed autographs.

The film was directed by Scottish director Kevin Macdonald, whose credits include “The Last King of Scotland.”

Macdonald said Mirren rose to the task of playing an editor but said Crowe was not initially convinced he could portray a journalist in a ‘noble role.

“He wasn’t sure he could play a heroic character as a journalist,” Macdonald said.

Mirren, however, was “the most convincing ruthless editor”, he said.

“Every hack in the world would love to have her as their editor … She is both sexy and authoritative.”
