'Twilight' Director Drops By For DVD Release

I'm lucky I'm a good student. My initial crossover into Stephenie Meyer's world of vampires prepared me for my latest Twilight experience, an interview with movie director Catherine Hardwicke.

I met Hardwicke, along with a legion of fans – ranging from giddy tweens in their "Team Edward" T-shirts to adults who waited in line for hours – when she made a surprise visit to the DVD release party March 20 at a Blockbuster in Frisco.

"You just meet all these different kinds of people," Hardwicke said of her film's fans.

Hardwicke, a McAllen native, said she enjoys seeing their enthusiasm and creativity.

Neither trait was lacking as the crowd lined up for her autograph and green screen photos with Twilight hero Edward Cullen. While they awaited the DVD's midnight release, fans showed off their gear and compared how many times they'd seen the movie and read each of the series' four novels.

Because of the books' following, Hardwicke encountered fans throughout the filming process. Some even managed to find the cast and crew as they worked.

"We were in pretty remote places," Hardwicke said. "People really had to dig."

But Hardwicke, who also directed Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown and The Nativity Story, only seemed impressed by the fanaticism.

"You get energy from the fact that people care about it," Hardwicke said.
